Atamiyu is a classic temple-style sento in a back lane off Kagurazaka, often used as a film location. The bath water is heated over a wood fire and runs hot, there's a Mt Fuji painting on the bathroom wall, and the attendant still sits at a raised bandai counter between the two changing rooms.

Insider tip

Wash at the taps before you get in, and keep your small towel out of the water. The water is hot, so ease in slowly. Shampoo and body soap are free. Open 2:45pm to midnight, closed Saturdays. It's 3 minutes from Iidabashi station.

Konparuyu is a small bandai sento in Ginza 8-chome with a Taisho-era shrine shelf and Kutani tile pictures. Kanda Inariyu gets a new wall painting by Mizuki Tanaka every year. Atamiyu in Kagurazaka heats its water over a wood fire, and Azabu Kurobisui Onsen Takenoyu near Azabu-Juban fills even its cold bath with black spring water.

Cobbled lanes with a French accent

Kagurazaka is in Shinjuku ward, on the slope that starts right outside Iidabashi Station. Kagurazaka grew up as a geisha district, and the stone-paved alleys like Hyogo Yokocho still carry that atmosphere. These days it's also Tokyo's little Paris, with French bakeries and bistros threaded between the kanzashi shops. Come in the early evening when the lanterns come on.

Kagurazaka has 5 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 1 cafe, 1 bar, 1 neighbourhood, 1 shrine or temple and 1 bathhouse. Read the Kagurazaka guide.
