Privacy and disclosure

The short version

Roam Tokyo doesn't require accounts, doesn't ask for personal information (unless you send in an event), and doesn't sell anything about you. Some hotel links earn us a commission. That's most of it.

What we store in your browser

The interactive map lets you save places. Those saves live in your browser's local storage, on your device, and never leave it. We can't see them. Clearing your browser data clears them.

Affiliate disclosure

Hotel search on this site is powered by Stay22. If you book a hotel after clicking through, Roam Tokyo may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how the site pays for itself. It does not affect which places appear on the map or what we say about them; nobody pays for placement here.

Stay22's link script loads on every page, and its hotel maps load where a page shows one. Both may set Stay22's own cookies, subject to their privacy policy.

Third-party services

Map tiles are served by OpenFreeMap, hotel maps and links by Stay22, and the visit counter by GoatCounter. Your browser requests those assets directly from their servers, which means those services see your IP address the same way they would on any site using them. Fonts and place photos are hosted on this site, so no font is requested from Google Fonts.

Visit counts

Visits are counted with GoatCounter, which sets no cookies and keeps no personal data. Clicks on hotel and tour links are counted the same way, by the kind of link and the page it was on, never the link's address or your dates.

Photo credits

Photos of places are either Creative Commons photos from Flickr (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 or public domain, credited to the photographer with the licence on every page that shows them) or Daniel's own. Every photo is checked to show the actual place; stock imagery is never used. If you are a photographer and believe an image is credited incorrectly, email us and it will be fixed promptly.

Events you send in

The Add your event form keeps what you type into it, including your email, on the site's private storage. The email is used only to ask you a question about the event, is never shown or shared, and is deleted once the event has been checked. Only the event's details are ever published, after they've been checked. To have a submission deleted, write to [email protected] with the event's name.
