Yagiri no Watashi is a rowed ferry across the Edo River between Shibamata and Matsudo in Chiba, the only river crossing of its kind still running in Tokyo and the subject of a hit 1980s enka song. There's no timetable. The boat goes when enough passengers are waiting.

Insider tip

It runs daily from mid-March to November and only at weekends and on holidays in winter, and it stops in bad weather. The fare is small. Cross, look back at Tokyo from the Chiba bank, and ride back.

Around 15,000 to 20,000 shells launched close to the grassy riverbank, so the bursts fill the sky directly overhead. Held on a Tuesday evening in late July; pairing it with a visit to Shibamata Taishakuten and its retro shopping street is the classic move.

Tora-san's hometown, a carved temple and the last rowed ferry in Tokyo

Shibamata sits at Tokyo's eastern edge on the Edo River, and it keeps the low-rise shitamachi streetscape the rest of the city lost. There's a 200-metre temple approach of dango and cracker shops, a temple covered in extraordinary wood carvings, and a hand-rowed ferry to Chiba. It's famous across Japan as the hometown of Tora-san, and in 2018 it became the first place in Tokyo named an Important Cultural Landscape.

Shibamata has 6 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 2 landmarks, 1 shrine or temple, 1 museum, 1 market and 1 bathhouse. Read the Shibamata guide.
