Sangenjaya

Two stops from Shibuya, an izakaya maze and Tokyo's other tram

Sangenjaya, Sancha to the people who live there, is the workaday cousin of Shimokitazawa. It's less curated and more lived-in, and it's home to one of the best izakaya mazes in the city. It sits two stops from Shibuya, has one of Tokyo's best free views, and is where the Setagaya Line tram starts.

The name means three teahouses, after the tea stalls that stood at the fork of the old Oyama pilgrimage road in the Edo period, and the neighbourhood still grows out of a junction. Setagaya-dori and Tamagawa-dori split at the station, with the elevated expressway overhead and the orange-tinted Carrot Tower above it all. Behind the main roads, the streets fall into lanes of small bars, restaurants, coffee roasters and second-hand shops that serve the residential Setagaya around them.

The heart of it is the Sankaku Chitai, the triangle zone of lantern-lit alleys just north-west of the station, where most bars seat fewer than ten and almost nobody takes reservations. It's a neighbourhood for the evening, but the day has its own draws. There's a free observation lounge at the top of Carrot Tower, specialty coffee on Chazawa-dori, and a two-car tram that rattles off from the foot of the tower toward Gotokuji's beckoning cats.

Getting there

Take the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line to Sangen-jaya, two stops and about five minutes from Shibuya. Many trains run through from the Hanzomon Line. The Tokyu Setagaya Line tram starts from its own station at the foot of Carrot Tower.

What to see

Start high. The Carrot Tower Observation Deck, on the 26th floor of the orange tower above the station, is a free lounge looking back over Shibuya and Tokyo Tower one way and out toward Mount Fuji the other. Locals come up to read in the window seats, and on a clear winter evening Fuji stands in silhouette against the sunset. The lounge closed suddenly in July 2026 after an air-conditioning failure, so check the Setagaya city website that it's reopened before you go up. The Setagaya Public Theatre is in the same building, and its programme of contemporary drama and dance is one of the reasons the neighbourhood has a creative bent.

Then ride the tram. The Tokyu Setagaya Line leaves from the foot of Carrot Tower and runs five kilometres and ten stations to Shimo-Takaido at one flat fare, in two-car trains that trundle past back gardens and level crossings. With the Toden Arakawa Line in the north, it's one of Tokyo's last two tram lines. Get off at Miyanosaka for Gotokuji, the temple of the beckoning cat, and carry on to Shimo-Takaido for its shopping street before you ride back. Back in Sangenjaya, the Sankaku Chitai is the sight after dark, a triangle of alleys dense with lanterns, bar signs and the sound of people eating.

Where to eat and drink

Evenings belong to the Sankaku Chitai. The alleys are packed with tiny izakaya, yakitori counters and bars, most of them seating under ten people and few of them taking bookings, so you walk, look in, and squeeze in wherever there's space. Point at what other tables are having, order a highball, and move on after a round or two. There's always another place a few steps away. If you come on a Friday or Saturday, the young Setagaya crowd fills every stool by eight, so weeknights are easier.

Coffee is the daytime habit. Obscura Laboratory, the roastery shop of Obscura Coffee Roasters, which started in Sangenjaya in 2009, pours hand brews to order on Chazawa-dori. It's mostly takeaway, so walk the cup up the street. For the other end of the day, Moon Factory Coffee is a second-floor kissaten that opens at 1pm and pours until 1am, closing on Thursdays and holidays. That makes it a rare late-night coffee in Tokyo and a good last stop once you're done with the izakaya.

Where to stay

Sangenjaya doesn't have much hotel stock of its own, which is part of why it feels residential. If you want to be here, the usual move is to rent an apartment in the blocks around the station, or to stay in Shibuya, five minutes away on the Den-en-toshi Line, and come out for the evening. The line runs straight through to the Hanzomon Line for Omotesando and central Tokyo, so a Sancha base works for sightseeing too. It suits repeat visitors, longer stays and anyone who'd rather drink in a local alley than a hotel bar. The last trains back to Shibuya run late enough that it's an easy night out from anywhere on the west side.

How to do it in a day

Come in the early afternoon and take a hand drip from Obscura Laboratory up Chazawa-dori. Walk back to the station and board the Tokyu Setagaya Line at the foot of Carrot Tower, riding to Miyanosaka for Gotokuji and its rows of beckoning cats, then on to Shimo-Takaido to walk the shopping street. Ride the tram back to Sangenjaya in time to take the lift to the Carrot Tower Observation Deck for sunset, if it's reopened, and you'll have Fuji on the horizon when the air is clear. As the lanterns come on, drop into the Sankaku Chitai and work through two or three of its bars and izakaya. Finish with a late coffee at Moon Factory Coffee before the train back to Shibuya.
