Kosugiyu Harajuku

Harajuku, Tokyo

Kosugiyu Harajuku is the Koenji bathhouse's second branch, in the basement of the Harakado building at the Jingumae crossing. Expect white tiles, round mirrors, the house milk bath every day and a 44°C hot tub next to a soft-water cold bath. It's a real ¥600 sento in the middle of Harajuku's shopping streets.

Insider tip

Wash at the taps before you get in, and keep your small towel out of the water. Face towels are ¥100 and bath towels ¥200. Open 7am to 11pm (last entry 10:15pm), closed Thursdays. Meiji-jingumae station is a minute away, JR Harajuku four.

Kosugiyu is the one most people have heard of. It's been in Koenji since 1933, in a wooden temple-style building with a curved gable over the door, and it's famous for its milk bath. It opens at 8am at weekends. Its second branch, Kosugiyu Harajuku, sits in the basement of the Harakado building in Harajuku and opens at 7am every day except Thursday. One stop from Koenji, Nakano Onsen Tenjinyu keeps its Mt Fuji painting and koi garden and was certified as a hot spring in 2025.

The jump cut is the whole point of Harajuku. Takeshita Street is loud and rammed with teenagers, and one block away Meiji Shrine sits inside a forest so quiet you'll hear the gravel under your feet. Do the shrine early in the morning, then watch the street wake up.

Harajuku has 8 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 2 shops, 2 museums, 1 shrine or temple, 1 park or garden, 1 restaurant and 1 bathhouse. Read the Harajuku guide.
