Insider tip

Adults pay ¥2,100 on weekdays and ¥2,900 at weekends and holidays. Towels (¥350 a set) and loungewear (¥450) are rentals, so bring your own towel to save. Tattoos of any size aren't allowed, and children under 6 can't use the baths. A shuttle bus runs from Sugamo station.

The water is often the selling point, but read the small print. Spa LaQua and Tokyo Somei Onsen Sakura pump their own springs. Thermae-yu trucks its water in from Naka-Izu, and the Toyosu Manyo Club brings its from Hakone and Yugawara by tanker. They're also stricter about tattoos and young children. Spa LaQua turns away under-6s, and Somei Onsen Sakura won't let them use the baths.
