Insider tip

Wash at the taps before you get in, and keep your small towel out of the water. One face towel is lent free, and rinse-in shampoo and body soap are provided. It opens at 3:30pm and closes on Saturdays. It's 6 minutes from Asakusabashi station.

In Asakusa, Hinodeyu has spring water and a cypress tub over 1,000 years old. Near the Skytree, Yakushiyu was redone in 2025 with Greek island murals, and Oshiage Onsen Daikokuyu stays open from 3pm until 10am the next morning. Down the river, Tsurunoyu between Asakusabashi and Kuramae is an unchanged temple-style sento on well water.

Makers, roasters and old granaries on the Sumida, a short walk from Asakusa

Kuramae takes its name from the shogunate's rice granaries that once lined this stretch of the Sumida, and it's spent the last fifteen years turning a quarter of small workshops and wholesalers into Tokyo's quietest creative district. Come for custom notebooks, bean-to-bar chocolate, one of the world's top roasters across the river, and two old shrines with sumo and festival history.

Kuramae has 7 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 2 cafes, 2 shrines and temples, 1 shop, 1 landmark and 1 bathhouse. Read the Kuramae guide.
