Kanda Matsuri 2027: Dates, Procession Route, and How to Watch

Kanda Matsuri returns as a main festival in May 2027. Expected dates, the Shinkosai procession and mikoshi day, where to watch around Akihabara and Kanda Myojin, stations, and where to stay.

Kanda Matsuri is the festival of Kanda Myojin Shrine, the shrine on the hill above Akihabara, and it’s one of the three great festivals of old Edo. Its main edition, the honmatsuri, is held only in odd-numbered years. Even years get a smaller, ritual-focused festival. 2027 is a main year. Two days are the highlights. The Shinkosai is an all-day procession of about 30 km through Kanda, Nihonbashi, Otemachi, Marunouchi and Akihabara, and the Mikoshi Miyairi the next day is when more than 200 neighbourhood mikoshi are carried into the shrine.

The 2027 dates hadn’t been announced at the time of writing. The festival runs for about a week in mid-May, and in the three most recent full editions (2019, 2023 and 2025) the Shinkosai fell on the second Saturday of May with the Miyairi on the Sunday. If 2027 follows that pattern, expect the Shinkosai on Saturday 8 May and the Miyairi on Sunday 9 May 2027. Treat this as expected until Kanda Myojin publishes its schedule.

See the procession pass through Akihabara on Saturday afternoon, then go to the shrine on Sunday for the mikoshi. Stay in Akihabara or Kanda and you’ll do both days on foot.

What happens

Shinkosai (Saturday). The shrine’s deities ride in ornate carts and palanquins, with a long procession of attendants in Heian-period costume and musicians. The procession leaves the shrine in the morning and loops through the parish all day. That’s a route of about 30 km. In the afternoon a second, more playful parade called the Tsukematsuri joins it, with floats and costumed groups. In 2023 the procession passed the Nihonbashi district around 4 PM, then followed Chuo-dori through Akihabara before returning to the shrine in the evening. The timetable isn’t the same every edition, so check the published route for 2027.

Mikoshi Miyairi (Sunday). Around 108 neighbourhood associations bring their mikoshi to the shrine through the day, more than 200 in total, from small children’s mikoshi to heavy shrines carried by teams of dozens. Each group chants its way up to the main gate, gets blessed and heads back out. The shrine grounds are packed from late morning to evening.

The rest of the week. Ceremonies, performances and the shrine’s grand festival rite on 15 May fill the other days. They’re quieter and more formal, and some happen inside the shrine.

Where to watch

Chuo-dori in Akihabara (Saturday). The wide avenue through Akihabara Electric Town gives the procession space, and there’s pavement for you to stand on. Arrive half an hour before the published passing time.

Nihonbashi and Marunouchi (Saturday). The procession through the old merchant district and the office towers near Tokyo Station is one of the more striking contrasts of the day, and the pavements there are wide.

Kanda Myojin (Sunday). The shrine sits on a small hill five minutes from Ochanomizu Station. The approach and the gate are where the mikoshi groups arrive. The grounds are small, so you’ll move slowly and watch from wherever the crowd lets you. Arrive mid-morning and you’ll have the best chance of a view before the peak.

There aren’t any paid seats for the procession or the Miyairi. Watching is free.

Getting there

Kanda Myojin is about five minutes on foot from Ochanomizu (JR Chuo and Sobu lines, Marunouchi Line), Shin-Ochanomizu (Chiyoda Line) and Suehirocho (Ginza Line), and about seven minutes from JR Akihabara. On Saturday, follow the procession on foot between Akihabara, Kanda and Nihonbashi. The stations are close together, and roads along the route close as it passes. On Sunday, Suehirocho or Ochanomizu is the easier way in, since Akihabara’s Electric Town exit is busy on any weekend.

What to bring

You’ll want comfortable shoes (Saturday can mean several kilometres on foot), water, cash for stalls, and patience at the shrine gate. Mid-May weather is usually pleasant, with warm afternoons. Mikoshi teams move fast and swing wide, so keep a step back from the carriers and follow the stewards.

Where to eat nearby

The area around the shrine has some of the best old-style eating in the city. Kanda Yabu Soba has served hand-cut soba since 1880 and is a short walk south of the shrine. Expect a queue at festival lunchtime. If you’re after heat, Kikanbo near Kanda Station does chilli and sansho miso ramen. mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi, a row of cafes and shops in a converted railway viaduct, is a calm place to reset between processions. The shrine’s own gate has old shops selling amazake, the sweet rice drink.

Where to stay for Kanda Matsuri

Akihabara is the natural base. It’s close to the shrine, on the procession route and well connected. The weekly hotel price index puts the Akihabara median at US$186 a night (sampled 29 September 2026, a two-night stay a month out). The Akihabara where to stay guide breaks down the blocks, and the Akihabara neighbourhood guide covers what to do between festival days.

  • Jimbocho, about 20 minutes’ walk west of the shrine, runs US$197 and puts you among bookshops and curry houses. See the Jimbocho guide.
  • Ueno, at US$203, is two stops north on the Yamanote Line and has plenty of mid-range hotels.
  • Ginza, at US$403, suits a pricier trip, and it’s close to the Nihonbashi stretch of the route.

Kanda Matsuri and Sanja Matsuri in one trip

Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa is held on the weekend built around the third Saturday of May, which in 2027 points to 14 to 16 May, one weekend after the expected Kanda dates. Neither is confirmed for 2027, but a trip spanning the second and third weekends of May could take in both. The events calendar lists each festival as its dates are announced.

Is Kanda Matsuri held every year?

The full festival, with the Shinkosai procession and the mikoshi day, is held in odd-numbered years. In even years the shrine holds a smaller festival focused on ritual. 2027 is a main year, and the next after that would be 2029.

Where is the best place to watch the Kanda Matsuri procession?

Chuo-dori through Akihabara in the late afternoon is the easiest, with wide pavements and plenty of stations. For the Sunday mikoshi, go to Kanda Myojin itself and arrive mid-morning.
