Hanazono Shrine sits right behind Shinjuku's neon, dedicated to the god of business and prosperity. It's a lantern-lit shrine with hostess bars and pachinko parlours on every side, which is about as Tokyo as it gets.

Come at night, when the red lanterns are lit and the place feels like a shrine again. On the rooster days of November the Tori-no-ichi fair fills the grounds with food stalls and lucky bamboo rakes.

Hanazono Shrine, behind Shinjuku's Kabukicho, holds one of the other big Tori-no-ichi fairs in Tokyo, on the same rooster days, with an eve festival the night before each one. Its grounds fill with kumade and food stalls against a backdrop of neon, and it's the easier choice if you're staying on the west side of the city. The shrine is a few minutes' walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station. Smaller fairs run at other Otori shrines across the city.

Small, atmospheric antique market held almost every Sunday from early morning in the grounds of Shinjuku's Hanazono Shrine, with 25 to 40 stalls of old ceramics, kimono, coins, and curios. Skipped on festival weekends and in bad weather, so go early and have a backup plan.
