Thermae-yu
Shinjuku, Tokyo
Thermae-yu is a big modern onsen complex in Kabukicho, open 24 hours. The outdoor bath uses real hot spring water trucked in from Naka-Izu, and there are saunas, a bedrock sauna room, restaurants and lounges where people nap between soaks. It's a spa, not a neighbourhood sento, and it's priced like one.
Insider tip
Entry is ¥3,100 Monday to Thursday and ¥3,200 Friday to Sunday, plus ¥900 on weekends and holidays, with a towel set and loungewear included. Tattoo rules are strict. Men who live in Japan can't come in with any tattoo, male tourists can bathe with one cover sticker (¥330) if they show a passport or air ticket from the last 90 days, and women need a sticker only for a tattoo over 30 cm square. The bathing floor closes for cleaning from 3am to 6am.
What the guides say about Thermae-yu

Kairyoyu, between Shibuya and Ebisu, is the designer one with a whale painted on the outside. Komyosen in Nakameguro has an open-air bath on its roof, which swaps between the men's and women's sides every Friday.

Around Shinjuku
Neon chaos, tiny bars, and a surprisingly serene garden
Shinjuku is the Tokyo people picture before they arrive, and it's every bit that intense. The trick is knowing when to switch modes. Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are for tiny-bar nights, and Shinjuku Gyoen is for when you need the volume turned down. The entry fee at Gyoen keeps the crowds manageable even in cherry blossom season, which makes it one of the best value tickets in the city.
Shinjuku has 16 places on the Roam Tokyo map: 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 parks and gardens, 2 bathhouses, 1 shrine or temple, 1 viewpoint, 1 landmark and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shinjuku guide.
