Koenji Junjo Shotengai
Koenji, Tokyo
Koenji Junjo Shotengai is the shopping street running north from Koenji station, more than two hundred shops of greengrocers, tofu makers, bakeries and second-hand stores. It was called Koenji Ginza until the neighbourhood renamed it after Nejime Shoichi's novel Koenji Junjo Shotengai, which won the Naoki Prize in 1989.
Insider tip
Walk it in the late afternoon, when the food shops are busiest, then turn into the side lanes for izakaya. Tensuke's egg tempura is a short detour.
What the guides say about Koenji Junjo Shotengai
Koenji is one of Tokyo's best cheap-eating neighbourhoods. Eat early, because tables are scarce once the dancing starts. Tensuke, the 12-seat tempura counter famous for its egg tempura bowl, is best at lunch, well before the crowds. Koenji Junjo Shotengai, north of the station, is lined with food shops and side-street izakaya. Koenji Pal Shotengai, the covered arcade south of the station, is where the festival started in the 1950s. Before the dancing, Koenji Hikawa Shrine holds Japan's only shrine to the weather, and locals leave wishes for fine skies on its geta-shaped ema.
