Koenji Pal Shotengai
Koenji, Tokyo
Koenji Pal Shotengai is a covered arcade running about 220 metres south from Koenji station, lined with clothing, general stores and cheap places to eat, and it carries straight on into Look Street's run of vintage shops. The Koenji Awa Odori, now one of the biggest summer dance festivals in Tokyo, grew out of this street in the late 1950s.
Insider tip
It's the dry route south on a wet day. Keep walking past the end of the arcade into Look Street for vintage, and come back on the last weekend of August for the Awa Odori, when around 10,000 dancers fill the streets.
What the guides say about Koenji Pal Shotengai
Koenji is one of Tokyo's best cheap-eating neighbourhoods. Eat early, because tables are scarce once the dancing starts. Tensuke, the 12-seat tempura counter famous for its egg tempura bowl, is best at lunch, well before the crowds. Koenji Junjo Shotengai, north of the station, is lined with food shops and side-street izakaya. Koenji Pal Shotengai, the covered arcade south of the station, is where the festival started in the 1950s. Before the dancing, Koenji Hikawa Shrine holds Japan's only shrine to the weather, and locals leave wishes for fine skies on its geta-shaped ema.
