How Much Does a Trip to Tokyo Cost? A Budget by Day
What a Tokyo trip costs: live hotel prices by area, official fares for airport trains and day-trip passes, and how to count the rest. Updated October 2026.
Places checked against official pages by Roam Tokyo, October 2026 How it's made
The hotel is the biggest line in a Tokyo budget, and it’s the one that moves most from week to week. The rest is food, local fares, tickets and the trips you add. This page gives the hotel numbers live, the transport fares the operators publish, and a way to count the parts that vary by person.
Fares are as of October 2026, from the operators’ own pages. Hotel figures come from the site’s weekly price index and change each week.
Hotels
The hotel price index was last sampled on 27 October 2026. It put the median night in Shinjuku at US$210, with the middle half of listings between US$161 and US$287 across 64 listings. Asakusa’s median was US$227 and Shibuya’s US$249. The cheapest Shinjuku listing was US$74.

The index is a snapshot for the dates on its page. Prices shift with the season, which is why the best time to visit page matters for a budget. Multiply the nightly figure by the nights from the how many days guide, then check the where to stay in Tokyo guide for which area suits your plan. Capsule hotels and ryokan sit at the two ends of the range.
Getting in from the airport
Keisei lists these one-way adult fares from Narita Terminal 2-3, as of October 2026 (see Keisei’s pages for Ueno, Tokyo Station, Shibuya and Asakusa).
| To | Time | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Ueno | 41 min | 2,470 yen |
| Tokyo Station | 47 min | 2,630 yen |
| Shibuya | 64 min | 2,670 yen |
| Asakusa | 50 min | 1,290 yen |
Haneda’s own page gives times and leaves the fares to Keikyu and the Tokyo Monorail, so check them there. The airport guide has the rest. Count the airport trip twice, there and back.
Getting around
Within the city, an IC card charges you the fare of each ride. Keisei’s Shibuya page prices one Yamanote Line leg at 194 yen with an IC card, and that’s one data point from the operators, not a daily average. The Tokyo Metro and Toei pages carry the subway fares and the Tokyo Subway Ticket, which didn’t load from here, so check Tokyo Metro. To estimate a day, list the rides in the itinerary you’ve picked and price each in the operator’s route search. The transport passes guide explains the cards and which passes are worth it.
Japan Rail Pass prices, if your trip includes long rail rides, run from 50,000 yen for 7 days ordinary to 140,000 yen for 21 days Green, bought online (Japan Rail Pass). For Tokyo alone, you don’t need one.
Day trips
- Hakone. The Hakone Freepass is 7,100 yen for adults, valid 2 days from Shinjuku, and includes the round-trip Odakyu fare (Odakyu). See the Hakone guide.
- Nikko. Tobu’s World Heritage Area pass is 3,000 yen for adults, valid 2 days, with a round trip from Asakusa to Shimo-Imaichi included. It excludes the limited express ticket and shrine admission (Tobu). See the Nikko guide.
- Other trips, including Kamakura, are compared in the day trips guide.
Sights and tickets
Plenty of Tokyo costs nothing. In the place data, Senso-ji, Meiji Shrine, Ueno Park, Shibuya Crossing and Nezu Shrine are all free. The free things to do collection lists more. Paid places carry a cost tier on the map, from one yen sign to three, and the place page links to the venue for the current price. This guide doesn’t quote admissions, since each venue sets and changes its own.

Food and nights out
Food prices vary too much by place for one number. The where to eat guide covers how to choose. Omoide Yokocho and Golden Gai are priced by what you order, and events and live music list gigs and festivals with their entry details. This weekend shows the next two days.
