Where to Stay in Ryogoku (2026): Hotels by the Sumo Hall

Ryogoku hotels by the sumo hall: APA's station tower, Ryogoku View and Dai-ichi Hotel Ryogoku, who the area suits, tournament booking and the weekly median.

Stay in Ryogoku if you’re in Tokyo for a sumo tournament, or if most of your trip is on the east side and you’d like a calmer base than Asakusa with Akihabara two stops away. The hotels are mostly business hotels and mid-range chains around the station. The three to know are APA Hotel & Resort Ryogoku Ekimae Tower and Ryogoku View Hotel by the JR West Exit, and Dai-ichi Hotel Ryogoku on top of the Oedo Line. Skip Ryogoku if nightlife is the point of the trip. Shinjuku and Roppongi are about 23 minutes away on the Oedo Line.

The weekly hotel price index put Ryogoku’s median at US$179 a night on 29 September 2026 (35 listings, a two-night stay a month out). For comparison, Asakusa came in at US$239, Akihabara at US$186 and Kuramae at US$184. For your own dates, open the Tokyo travel map, put the dates in and tap Search this area for hotels.

Who Ryogoku suits

Sumo fans in January, May and September. Ryogoku Kokugikan is about two minutes on foot from the JR West Exit. A tournament day runs from the junior divisions in the morning to the top division in the late afternoon, and sleeping next door means you can go back to your room in between. Rooms near the hall book up early in tournament months, so don’t wait.

East-side trips. The Edo-Tokyo Museum, the Sumida Hokusai Museum and Kyu-Yasuda Garden are all within fifteen minutes’ walk of the station. Asakusa and Kuramae are a 20 to 30 minute walk up the Sumida River, and Akihabara is two stops west on the Sobu Line.

Not a first trip built around the west side. If Shinjuku, Shibuya and Harajuku fill most of your days, sleep on that side. The site’s pick for a first trip is Shinjuku’s west side, and the where to stay in Tokyo guide explains why.

Hotels by the station

APA Hotel & Resort Ryogoku Ekimae Tower at 1-11-10 Yokoami is three minutes from the JR West Exit and four from exit A3 of the Oedo Line station. It’s an APA tower, so expect the chain’s compact rooms. See prices

Hotel links go through Stay22: if you book, Roam Tokyo earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Ryogoku View Hotel at 2-19-1 Ryogoku is a minute from the JR West Exit, the same exit you’d use for the Kokugikan. It opened in 1997 and has 150 rooms. See prices

Dai-ichi Hotel Ryogoku at 1-6-1 Yokoami is connected to exit A1 of the Oedo Line station and about six minutes on foot from the JR station. The Oedo Line is the one that loops round to Roppongi and Shinjuku, so this is the pick if your days are split between the east side and the west. See prices

Cheaper rooms and the next stations along

Hostels and small budget hotels on this side of the river open and close often, so check the map pins for what’s running on your dates. If Ryogoku itself is full, look one stop either way on the Sobu Line. Kinshicho, one stop east, has more hotel stock around a bigger station. Asakusabashi, one stop west, is where you’ll find HOTEL MYSTAYS Asakusabashi, about 850 m from Ryogoku Station.

Getting around from Ryogoku

Ryogoku has two separate stations a few minutes apart. JR Ryogoku is on the Sobu local line, two stops from Akihabara, and the local trains run on through central Tokyo to Shinjuku. Toei Ryogoku is on the Oedo Line, about 23 minutes from Shinjuku and about 23 from Roppongi. For the Sobu Rapid Line, change at Kinshicho, one stop east. From there it’s about 10 minutes to Tokyo Station.

From Haneda, take the Keikyu line to Daimon (about 23 minutes), then the Oedo Line to Ryogoku (about 17 minutes). Allow around 45 minutes door to door.

From Narita, allow about an hour and a half by JR. Take the Sobu Line rapid to Kinshicho (some trains need a change at Chiba), then go one stop back on the Sobu local.

When to book

The Japan Sumo Association lists the 2027 Tokyo tournaments as 10 to 24 January, 9 to 23 May and 12 to 26 September. Tickets for January go on sale on 5 December 2026. If you’re going, book the room the day you get your tickets. Outside those months Ryogoku is a normal business-hotel district, and the price index shows how its median moves week to week.

The sumo guide covers tickets, same-day seats and how a tournament day runs.

Around the hotels

Ryogoku Edo Noren, in the 1929 station building next to the JR platform, is the easiest place to try chanko nabe without a booking. Beer Club Popeye has around 70 Japanese craft beers on tap a few minutes from the hall, with happy hour from 3pm, Monday to Saturday. The Sumo Museum inside the Kokugikan is free on weekdays outside tournaments, and Yokoamicho Park, the 1923 earthquake memorial, is a six-minute walk east of the hall.
