Tokyo Weather by Month: Temperatures, Rain and What to Pack
Tokyo weather month by month from the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 normals: highs, lows, rainfall and rainy days, plus when the weather suits a trip.
Tokyo is coldest in January, when the average high is 9.8°C and the average low 1.2°C, and hottest in August, at 31.3°C and 23.5°C. The wettest months are September and October, each with more than 220 mm of rain. The table below holds every month, and each season gets a few lines on what the numbers mean for a trip.
Tokyo weather by month
The figures are the Japan Meteorological Agency’s normals for the Tokyo station, averaged over 1991 to 2020 (JMA temperature table, JMA rainfall table). High and low are the averages of the daily maximum and minimum. Rainy days are days with 1 mm or more.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9.8°C | 1.2°C | 60 mm | 4.5 |
| February | 10.9°C | 2.1°C | 56 mm | 5.2 |
| March | 14.2°C | 5.0°C | 116 mm | 9.2 |
| April | 19.4°C | 9.8°C | 134 mm | 9.5 |
| May | 23.6°C | 14.6°C | 140 mm | 10.1 |
| June | 26.1°C | 18.5°C | 168 mm | 11.6 |
| July | 29.9°C | 22.4°C | 156 mm | 10.5 |
| August | 31.3°C | 23.5°C | 155 mm | 7.9 |
| September | 27.5°C | 20.3°C | 225 mm | 11.0 |
| October | 22.0°C | 14.8°C | 235 mm | 10.5 |
| November | 16.7°C | 8.8°C | 96 mm | 7.4 |
| December | 12.0°C | 3.8°C | 58 mm | 5.2 |
These are averages. A single week can run several degrees either side, so pack for the range in the table and check the forecast a few days before you fly. Don’t plan around one number.
Tokyo weather in winter: December to February
Winter is the driest part of the year. January and February each see about 60 mm of rain and only four or five rainy days, so most days are dry with cold nights close to freezing. Daytime highs of 10°C are cold for a day outside, so you’ll want a proper coat.
December is milder, with a 12.0°C average high and only 5.2 rainy days, and the lights are on. The winter illuminations guide and the December events page list what is on, and Tokyo in winter covers the season as a whole.
Tokyo weather in March and April
March is the unsettled month. The average high is 14.2°C, but the rain more than doubles from February to 116 mm, and rainy days almost double to 9.2. Pack a light waterproof and a warm layer, since evenings aren’t mild yet.
April brings the average high to 19.4°C and the low to 9.8°C, which is comfortable for walking all day. Rain is still around at 134 mm over 9.5 days, so don’t leave the umbrella at the hotel. Blossom timing moves from year to year, and Tokyo in spring and the cherry blossom guide follow it.
Tokyo weather in May and June
May is warm at 23.6°C with cool nights at 14.6°C, and the humidity starts to build. June is the first month where the lows sit above 18°C and rain falls on 11.6 days on average, the most of any month. That’s the early-summer rainy stretch, and it suits museums, covered arcades and the rainy day collection.
Tokyo weather in July and August
July and August are the hot months. Highs average 29.9°C and 31.3°C, and the lows stay at 22.4°C and 23.5°C, so the city doesn’t cool off at night. August has fewer rainy days (7.9) than July (10.5). Plan outdoor sights for the morning, spend the middle of the day inside, and it’s worth reading Tokyo in summer for the festivals and fireworks that make the heat worth it.
Tokyo weather in September and October
September and October are the two wettest months in the table, at 225 mm and 235 mm. Rainy days run at 11.0 and 10.5, so you’ll see several wet days in any week. The two months feel very different, though. September is still hot, with a 27.5°C high and 20.3°C low. By October the high is 22.0°C and the low 14.8°C, which is good walking weather between the showers.
Tokyo weather in November
November is the driest of the autumn months, at 96 mm over 7.4 rainy days. The average high is 16.7°C and the low 8.8°C, so mornings and evenings need a jacket and midday is mild. It’s also the month of the autumn colour. Tokyo in autumn and the autumn leaves guide track it, and the November events page lists what is on.
Which month has the best weather?
By the numbers, the comfortable stretch is late March to early May and then late October to November, when the average highs sit between 14°C and 24°C. Both have rainy days, but they don’t bring the heat of July and August or the cold of January. If you can only pick one, November has the best ratio of dry days to mild temperatures. The best neighbourhoods guide helps you pick where to base yourself once you have the month.
Planning around the weather
- Use the map to find indoor places such as museums, sento and covered shopping streets for the wet days, and events for what is on the dates you travel.
- Hotel prices move through the year. The weekly hotel price index sampled on 13 October 2026 put the median Shinjuku night at US$218 and Asakusa at US$251.
- Don’t know where to sleep yet? The where to stay in Tokyo guide compares the areas.
